Styloid Apparatus (Structures attached to the styloid process)


Styloid process of temporal bone is a projection 2.5 cm long -extends downwards and forwards -little in front of mastoid process. It gives attachment to 2 ligaments and 3 muscles and it also has some important relations ----- it is called styloid apparatus

Structures attached to styloid process - 2 ligaments & 3 muscles

Two ligaments --- Stylohyoid ligament & stylomandibular ligament

Three muscles ---- Styloglossus, Stylohyoid, stylopharyngeus muscles


Relations of styloid process ----

Laterally - paroid gland, facial nerve

Medially - internal carotid artery, internal jugular vein, IX, X,XI, XII (last 4) cranial nerves
