Boundaries and contents of posterior triangle


Boundaries of posterior triangle

In front - posterior border of sternocleidomastoid

Behind - Anterior border of trapezius

Base - middle one third of clavicle

Apex - superior nuchal line where these 2 muscles meet

Roof - Skin, superficial fasica, platysma, investing layer of deep cervical fascia

Floor - semispinalis capitis, splenius capitis, levator scapulae, scaleneus anterior, medius and posterior

Contents of posterior triangle

The triangle is divided into upper large Occipital triangle and lower small supra-clavicular triangle by inferior belly of omohyoid muscle

Contents of Occipital triangle : Spinal Accessory nerve, 3rd & 4th cervical nerves, dorsal scapular nerve, four cutaneous branches of cervical plexus (lesser occipital, great auricular, transverse cervical, supraclavicular), occipital artery

Contents of supraclaviular triangle: subclavian artery, subclavian vein, terminal part of external jugular vein, trunks of brachial plexus
